In that sense, Undertale is probably most similar, both with presentation style (aside from adding shmup gameplay to the battle system), and its willingness to challenge and parody RPG tropes, though it goes a lot farther than Earthbound does. But Earthbound's claim to fame isn't the battle system (except the rolling HP meters), but rather it's the humorously absurd style that riffs on RPG tropes. Basically, big pictures of the enemies, and your characters are barely even shown if at all, except via status boxes. If you want the top-down view and the bizarre atmospheric nature of things, there's Anodyne, though that's not an RPG.Įarthbound was descended from Dragon Quest in its presentation style, and there's a Dragon Quest game on here, but it's probably nothing like Earthbound.Ī good lot of RPG Maker games (but certainly not all of them) DO have a similar presentation style, with respect to the battles at least.
